# The IFP’s National Council will be briefed on the coalition talks today
# Two suspects have been arrested for the Khayelitsha barbershop murders
# And the World Bank predicts a stabilisation in the global economy
# The IFP says its coalition negotiations team will brief the National Council today, the party’s highest decision-making body in between conferences, to seek a mandate on its proposals. The seven-member negotiations team led by deputy president Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi facilitated talks with other political parties on the ANC’s proposal for a government of national unity. The party will also brief the media this evening. Reportedly the ANC is leaning towards a government with the DA and the IFP.
# Trade union Solidarity has urged political parties involved in talks for a government of national unity to oppose the National Health Insurance Act. The call comes amid president Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement that he will oppose the union’s court application against the NHI. Solidarity’s Anton van der Bijl argues the NHI is unconstitutional, unaffordable, and would reduce access to quality healthcare. Van der Bijl vows to challenge the NHI to the highest court:
# Two suspects have been charged for the murders of a 30-year-old man and three children in Khayelitsha, as well as nine attempted murder charges. This comes after unknown gunmen entered a barbershop and opened fire at occupants at the premises on Saturday afternoon. The suspects will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on Friday. Western Cape MEC of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen, says this is a major breakthrough:
# A Durban man accused of killing a pro-Palestinian woman must return to the local Magistrate’s Court next month after psychiatrists declared him fit to stand trial. Forty-four-year-old Grayson Beare faces charges of murder and attempted murder after his attack on Falima Hoosen-Preston and her family earlier this month. Beare is the adopted son of the managing director of retailer Beare Holdings, Julian Beare. He says the family has distanced itself from the accused’s actions and will not assist his defence in any way.
# The World Bank expects the global economy to stabilise at a weak level, with growth reaching 2.6-percent this year and 2.7-percent in 2025 and 2026. This prediction is down from the 3.1-percent average before Covid-19. The bank says developing economies will grow by four-percent, slightly lower than in 2023. Furthermore, low-income economies are forecasted to grow at five-percent, while advanced economies will maintain steady growth at 1.5-percent. The bank says global inflation is expected to be moderate, but interest rates may remain high.
# Golf: World number one Scottie Scheffler of the US has been grouped alongside compatriot Xander Schauffele and Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy for the first two rounds of the 124th US Open. American Wyndham Clark, who edged out McIlroy last year, begins his title defence alongside compatriots Brian Harman and Nick Dunlap. Three-time winner Tiger Woods will tee off with Will Zalatoris of the US and England’s 2022 champion Matt Fitzpatrick. McIlroy says it’s exciting to be a part of a marquee group:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-55-cents and the euro at 19-rand-93-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-64-cents and Bitcoin trades at 67-thousand-411-dollars-24-cents.
