In this bulletin:
# Jacob Zuma warns the Election Commission against the declaring the election results today
# South Africa’s credit ratings history shows a significant decline
# And soccer: Orlando Pirates successfully defend their Nedbank Cup title
# MK Party president Jacob Zuma is threatening to challenge the announcement of the election results by the Electoral Commission today, saying any declaration of the election would be tantamount to provoking his party. MK has alleged they possess evidence of election rigging and has called for a recount. The IEC has received a total of 579 objections. Zuma says he is worried that there are wrong things that happened during the counting process by the IEC which is guided by principles and laws:
Zuma also says the alleged irregularities by the Electoral Commission are serious. The party accuses the IEC of vote rigging and claims that the ANC abused state resources to advance their own gains, against the will of the people. MK received 14.58-percent of the national votes. Zuma says the IEC must give parties a chance to present their case, adding that all they want is transparency:
# South Africa’s credit ratings history has shown a significant decline. Thirty years into democracy, the rating has dropped to sub-investment or junk status. The country once enjoyed investment-grade status, attracting significant foreign and local investment. According to ABSA analyst Simphiwe Letlojane to regain investment-grade status, South Africa must implement strong economic reforms and work on measures to rebuild investor confidence:
# The South African National Defence Union is demanding more information from the South African National Defence Force following the death of a soldier and injuries to 13 others in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The soldiers were involved in a battle with M23 rebels. They also requested details about reported equipment losses. The union’s secretary, Pikkie Greeff, extended condolences to the deceased soldier’s family and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
# And finally soccer: Orlando Pirates have successfully defended their Nedbank Cup title as they beat Mamelodi Sundowns two-one at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga. Nineteen-year-old Relebohile Mofokeng came off the bench to score the winning goal in the 90th minute after Patrick Maswanganyi had earlier levelled the score for the Buccaneers with a penalty. This was following Themba Zwane’s opener for Sundowns. Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has won four out of five domestic cup competitions since he arrived at the club at the start of last season.
