# The DA condemns the murder of their by-election candidate in Dunoon
# And cricket: The Proteas Women beat India to keep their World Cup hopes alive
# ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa says he has been encouraged by the large number of first-time voters he encountered on the campaign trail. He was on the campaign trail in Tshwane yesterday as part of the voter registration weekend, ahead of the November local government elections. Ramaphosa says the enthusiasm and active participation of young people reaffirms his confidence that a new generation is ready to take responsibility for shaping the future of their communities and the country:
Meanwhile, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has emphasised the importance of broad public participation in the electoral process ahead of the upcoming local government elections in November. He says the elections allow citizens to choose leaders who are directly responsible for delivering services and driving development in their communities. The minister says the decisions taken by municipalities affect the daily lives of residents, from water and sanitation to roads, electricity, local economic development, and community safety.
# The Siyafana Sonke Action Campaign encourages South Africans to unite against xenophobia attacks amidst the looming deadline for migrants to leave South Africa. A Malawian foreign national was killed, and two other individuals were assaulted following a suspected xenophobic attack in the JikaJoe Informal Settlement in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday. The Siyafana Sonke Action Campaign is a recently established national campaign against xenophobia, endorsed by over 130 organisations. The campaign hopes to unite all those opposing xenophobia, ethnic chauvinism, and anti-poor, anti-worker vigilantism in the country.
# The DA in Cape Town has condemned the murder of its Dunoon Ward 104 by-election candidate and community activist, Sinovuyo Dyokwe. Dyokwe was gunned down en route home from the voter registration venue where she was assisting during the first day of the Voter Registration Weekend. The party’s Nicholas Gotsell says it will be monitoring the situation closely and will fight to ensure Dyokwe’s loved ones receive the justice they deserve:
# US vice president JD Vance says progress has been made during the first round of direct peace talks in Switzerland. This is despite negotiations between the US and Iran having stalled yesterday, after US president Donald Trump threatened the Iranian delegation and drew a sharp rebuke from Tehran’s top negotiator. The talks come after the two countries signed an initial agreement to end the war last week. Vance says America is willing to transform its relations with Iran fundamentally:
# Cricket: An all-round performance by Marizanne Kapp powered South Africa to a six-wicket victory over India in Manchester, to keep alive their hopes of making the T20 Women’s World Cup playoffs. Kapp and Shabnim Ismail took two wickets as India were restricted to 158 for seven. In reply, Kapp scored an unbeaten 81 and shared a third-wicket partnership of 97 with Tazmin Britz, as the Proteas Women reached the target with five balls to spare. This was South Africa’s highest successful chase in a Women’s T20 World Cup.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-42-cents and the euro at 18-rand-85-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-71-cents and Bitcoin trades at 63-thousand-658-dollars.
