In this bulletin:
# South Africa targets a 60-day fuel safety net
# The police say the Cleveland massacre could be connected to illegal mining
# And rugby: Ruben van Heerden replaces Salmaan Moerat in the Boks’ training squad
# The government plans to significantly increase emergency fuel stockpiles after a review found major weaknesses in the petroleum security system. Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe says a draft policy proposes building strategic fuel reserves of up to 60-days of net imports, compared to current levels of about two weeks. He says the plan is aimed at improving energy security amid global supply risks and conflict-related disruptions:
# Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, says the reform agenda underway in the department aims to improve accountability, protect public money, and address long-standing institutional failures. He has expressed concern about the Property Management Trading Entity, which manages one of South Africa’s largest public property portfolios, saying it is financially unstable and operationally weak. The entity’s overdraft has doubled to nearly four-billion-rand, and has not achieved a clean audit since 2014. Macpherson says the department cannot be rebuilt without confronting internal dysfunction.
# Gauteng Police Commissioner, Tommy Mthombeni, says the mass shooting at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland, Johannesburg, on Tuesday evening, could be linked to illegal mining in the area. The shooting claimed the lives of 12 people, wounded at least nine, while police have launched a manhunt for about ten suspects. Mthombeni says it is likely that the incident was a result of a feud between illegal miners operating in the area:
# US president Donald Trump says Iran has taken too long to negotiate a deal and will now have to pay the price. This comes after the two sides exchanged strikes following the downing of an American helicopter earlier this week. The US military targeted Iranian air defence, ground control stations, and surveillance radar sites. In retaliatory strikes, Tehran targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait. Speaking at the White House, Trump says all Iran has to do is sign the deal:
# Rugby: Lock Salmaan Moerat’s Test future is uncertain after he was forced to withdraw from the Springboks’ training camp in Johannesburg due to injury. He was replaced by Stormers teammate Ruben van Heerden, who excelled during the United Rugby Championship season. The squad is preparing for the first Test of the season, against the Barbarians in Gqeberha next Saturday. On the same day, South Africa A will face Zimbabwe in a double-feature. Bok coach Rassie Erasmus will announce his team for the Test next week.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-56-cents and the euro at 19-rand11-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-13-cents and Bitcoin trades at 61-thousand-475-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-63-dollars-32-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 93-dollars-51-cents a barrel.
# A new University of Cape Town study has found that South Africa’s breast cancer care system is failing many women due to serious shortages in specialists, equipment and access to timely treatment. The research shows that most patients are diagnosed at a late stage, with about two-thirds already in advanced disease, reducing their chances of survival. Researchers say better early detection, improved facilities and stronger health system support are needed to improve survival rates.
