# President Trump blames the poor election results on the government shutdown
# And rugby: Nick Mallett says Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu isn’t arrogant, just confident
# Acting Police minister Firoz Cachalia says South Africa is lucky to have president Cyril Ramaphosa at the helm. Appearing before Parliament’s ad hoc committee, Cachalia praised Ramaphosa’s leadership in fighting corruption, organised crime, and rebuilding institutions. He stressed that strong presidential leadership remains key to tackling systemic weaknesses and ensuring stability across the country’s criminal justice system:
Cachalia says KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s camouflage uniform at his July 6 media briefing sparked fears of a possible coup. Cachalia says Mkhwanazi’s appearance was alarming, especially as he had made claims of political interference by Police minister Senzo Mchunu and links to criminal cartels:
# The National Prosecuting Authority has added Russell Patrick Paul, former acting CEO of SAFA, to the fraud case against Danny Jordaan and three others. The NPA’s Phindi Mjonondwane says Paul allegedly conspired with the accused to commit fraud by authorising payments without a contractual basis. Mjonondwane says he appeared in Palmridge Magistrate’s Court and was granted ten-thousand-rand bail. The main case resumes on 21 November:
# The Department of Small Business Development has published the draft Business Licensing Bill for public comment. The bill aims to empower local councils to provide preferential licensing for small businesses owned by disadvantaged groups. The National Employers’ Association of South Africa has raised concerns over vague language, potential exclusionary practices, and impractical implementation, warning that the legislation may harm free-market functioning and impede participation in South Africa’s informal economy.
# US president Donald Trump says the government shutdown was a big negative factor for the Republicans in Tuesday’s election results. Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral race, while Democrats Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill won their respective governor races in Virginia and New Jersey. The elections were seen as the first major electoral tests of Trump’s second presidency. In remarks to Senate Republicans at the White House, Trump said they have learnt a lot from the election results.
# Rugby: Former Springbok player and coach Nick Mallett believes young flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu isn’t arrogant, just confident. He says he realises he has a swagger, but points out that comes with youth and talent, and he is using that to his advantage and that of the national team. Mallett also says the Boks are gladly accepting the timely boost of a new superstar, although some people feel it borders on arrogance. He thinks confidence in sport is a massive advantage, and that Feinber-Mngomezulu has a winning attitude.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-40-cents and the euro at 20-rand-5-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-71-cents and Bitcoin trades at 103-thousand-751-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-979-dollars-50-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 63-dollars-33-cents a barrel.
