# President Ramaphosa says the ANC has held constructive discussions with parties
# And the UN condemns a deadly Israeli strike on one of its schools school in Gaza
# President Cyril Ramaphosa says the ANC’s national executive committee has decided to make an offer to most political parties to join a government of national unity. This comes after the party failed to secure more than 50-percent of the national vote in the 29 May general elections. Ramaphosa says a government of national unity is the most viable, effective, and powerful way of meeting the expectations of all South Africans at this moment:
Ramaphosa also says the ANC has already initiated discussions with the DA, EFF, IFP, NFP, and the Patriotic Alliance, as it seeks to form a government of national unity. Ramaphosa says the ANC entered discussions with political parties with an open mind and a commitment to speak to all parties that have a stated intention to advance the interests of the people:
# The MK Party has confirmed that engagements with the ANC regarding coalition discussions have occurred. The ANC stated that it had reached out to all political parties represented in the National Assembly in its efforts to form a coalition government. The MK Party says it would meet with the ANC soon to hear its views. It adds that any coalition has to focus on eradicating the systems that preserve and support the prolonged political subjugation and economic enslavement of the South African majority and black people in particular.
# Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has condemned the fatal shooting of a seven-year-old Grade 2 learner from Lesedi Primary School in Soshanguve and her four-year-old sister inside their home. Spokesperson Steve Mabona stated that the department swiftly dispatched district and Childline social workers to provide counselling and trauma support at the school and to the bereaved family. He confirmed police are investigating the circumstances around the tragic incident:
# The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees says attacking or using UN buildings for military purposes is a blatant disregard of International Humanitarian law. This comes after an Israeli air strike on a UN school packed with displaced Palestinians in central Gaza has killed at least 35 people. Israel’s military says it had conducted a precise strike on a Hamas compound in the school. Unrwa says over 180 of its buildings were hit and more than 450 displaced people were killed as a result.
# Rugby: Bulls wing Canan Moodie has been ruled out of Saturday’s United Rugby Championship quarterfinal clash against Benetton at Loftus Versfeld due to injury. The Springbok World Cup winner was injured in the Bulls’ 26-14 win over the Sharks last weekend. Sebastian de Klerk is Moodie’s likely replacement on the wing. Moodie has scored ten tries in 14 appearances for the Bulls in all competitions this season. Flank Marco van Staden is also likely to miss the encounter with an injury.
