BULLETIN 2 June 6 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The capturing of the final election results is completed
# The IEC receives over 500 objections
# And, Netanyahu insists there will be no ceasefire until Hamas is defeated
# The Electoral Commission says 100-percent of the election votes have been captured and issued. The ANC received 40.19-percent of the national votes followed by the DA at 21.08-percent, the MK Party in third at 14.58-percent, fourth is the EFF at 9.51-percent and the IFP rounds out the top five at 3.85-percent. The commission will announce the results this evening. IEC chairperson Mosotho Moepya says all systems remained functional and uncompromised throughout the process:
Meanwhile, the commission says it has received 579 objections after it extended the deadline for objections to yesterday evening. This extension followed an urgent objection submitted by 17 political parties in the Western Cape under Section 55 of the Electoral Act. The complaints were filed before the results were finalised. IEC chairperson Mosotho Moepya says they are also dealing with 24 recounts, but emphasises that these are not material enough to have an impact on the outcome of an election:
# The Patriotic Alliance has announced its willingness to work with any political party in forming coalitions. However, PA leader Gayton McKenzie emphasised that their stance on illegal immigration is non-negotiable. Speaking at the results operations centre in Midrand, McKenzie insists on having control of the Department of Home Affairs as part of any coalition agreement:
# Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared there will be no permanent ceasefire in Gaza until Hamas’s military and governing capabilities are destroyed and all hostages are released. This follows US president Joe Biden’s announcement of a three-stage plan proposed by Israel, aimed at a permanent ceasefire. Amid ongoing fighting in Rafah, Netanyahu’s office reaffirmed Israel’s unchanged conditions, emphasising the need to eliminate the Hamas threat and secure hostage freedom before any ceasefire agreement.
# And finally rugby: Akker van der Merwe scored a brace of tries as the Bulls claimed a 26-14 bonus-point win over the Sharks in Durban and finished second in the United Rugby Championship. Defending champions Munster earned the top ranking for the play-offs by beating Ulster 29-24. Munster will face Ospreys in quarter-final one at Thomond Park, Limerick, while the Bulls will host Benetton at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.
