# The popular National Arts Festival in Makhanda in the Eastern Cape is poised to be a spectacular showing given it celebrating its 50th anniversary. South Africa’s longest-running and most diverse arts festival will feature over 200 events, including the production 1789, a cutting-edge performance about liberty, equality and fraternity. Legendary Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse and award-winning afro-soul jazz artist Mandisa Dyantyis are some of the musical guests. The festival runs from the 20th to the 30th of June.
# The University of Cape Town is the highest ranked South African university in the latest QS World University Rankings. UCT is number 171 on the list, followed by Wits at 267, Stellenbosch University at 296 and the University of Pretoria at number 354. The world’s top university is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US, followed by Imperial College London and the University of Oxford, both in the United Kingdom.
# The University of Johannesburg Art Gallery is set to host an exhibition titled African Hero from Saturday until next week Wednesday. The exhibition in partnership with Rainbow Nation Comics and Afro Geek aims to Africanise the superhero aesthetic for local audiences, highlighting unique storytelling rooted in African values. The gallery is urging people to come and explore captivating artworks and for the kids to enjoy a variety of exciting activities, including a jumping castle, superhero face painting, and comic book merchandise stalls.
# Ten students from around the country are the second batch of bursary recipients to benefit from reigning Miss South Africa Natasha Joubert’s educational advocacy campaign, the Natasha Joubert Collective. This is in partnership with HyperionDev and computer hardware company ASUS. The campaign offers ten coding scholarships for selected students to join a comprehensive six-month full-stack web developer boot camp. Six of the recipients are from Gauteng, and one each from the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State and Limpopo.
# And finally: Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, actress Harriet Dyer and Australian series Colin From Accounts were some of the winners at the first-ever Gotham TV Awards held in New York. Baby Reindeer won the breakthrough limited series with Colin From Accounts’ Dyer winning outstanding performance in a comedy series. The Australian series also won breakthrough comedy series, while Ripley’s Andrew Scott walked away with the award for outstanding performance in a limited series. Breakthrough nonfiction series went to Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show.
