BULLETIN 4 June
Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# A 91-year-old man has become the first person in England to be fitted with a ground-breaking artificial cornea. Cecil John Farley says his sight was now improving thanks to the procedure. He is overjoyed by the transplant because he can now continue to see his 83-year-old wife, Elizabeth. Patients with cornea damage are often left facing a long wait for a human transplant. The artificial device will slash waiting times and eliminate the risk of the human body rejecting corneas received from an organ donor.
# The George Municipality’s Pacaltsdorp Library has established a mini-library for the blind. The project is a collaboration between the Department of Arts and Culture and the South African Library for the Blind. The municipality’s spokesperson, Ntobeko Mangqwengqwe, says the objective is to provide access to reading materials through assistive devices and necessary technology:
# As Gauteng experiences a cold front, the Rosebank Rotary Handmade with Love team has donated knitted beanies to the Charity Begins With Me organisation. Founder Stephen Ferreira, who started the charity in 2016 after his cancer diagnosis, continues to lead efforts despite his health battles. He says the beanies will be especially handy over the next few days as the province endures a cold spell.
# Road running: Sixty Stellenbosch University staff, students and alumni will participate in the 97th Comrades Marathon on Sunday under the #Move4Maties initiative. The race starts at the Durban City Hall and ends at the Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg, covering a distance of 85.91 kilometres. The initiative aims to raise funds for the missing middle students, who don’t qualify for assistance from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme and cannot afford tuition. Already, over 44-thousand-rand has been raised.
# And finally: American singer-songwriter Cyndi Lauper has announced she will embark on a farewell tour from October to December, her first major tour in ten years. The Girls Just Wanna Have Fun tour will see her perform in 23 cities across North America and kicks off in Montreal, Canada, on the 18th of October. Seventy-year-old Lauper, a two-time Grammy winner, is best known for songs including Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time.
