BULLETIN 3 June
Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# The University of Johannesburg says not even a physical disability could stop Hester Visagie from achieving her goals. The 58-year-old recently graduated with a PhD in Nursing Science. A few months into the Covid-19 pandemic Visagie was involved in a freak motor accident, sustaining a spinal injury that required surgery. Post-surgical complications resulted in a physical disability, necessitating the use of a foot brace and a crutch. The university’s professor Annie Temane says Visagie was self-motivated, self-disciplined, passionate, and curious.
# With June being National Environment Month, Bay Harbour Market traders are committed to sustainable business practices. LEZA was founded by sustainable designer, Jodi Leza Thurtell, who recycles textile waste into fashion. In Cape Town alone, 70-thousand tons of textile waste overwhelms landfills annually. Thurtell says embracing sustainability begins with education and awareness, which are crucial steps toward a greener future. Another trader, Dante Bazzea, founded Peaches Skateboarding. He designs and prints locally while also selling locally-made branded boards.
# Legendary saxophonist McCoy Mrubata had the opening of his homecoming concert at The Star Theatre in District Six, Cape Town over the weekend. Presented by the Cape Town Music Academy, the concert features his American guitarist Gary Wittner and two of Cape Town’s finest musicians, Sibusiso Matsimela on bass and drummer Tefo Mohola. Mrubata has enjoyed a music career that has spanned six decades and 20 albums. His last show will be at Café Roux in Noordhoek on Thursday. His new album is titled Lullaby for Khayoyo.
# Ninety-three-year-old billionaire media mogul, Rupert Murdoch, has married for the fifth time. He tied the knot with 67-year-old retired Russian biologist, Elena Zhukova, in California. They met at a party hosted by one of Murdoch’s ex-wives, Chinese-born entrepreneur Wendi Deng. Murdoch’s New York-based company News Corp owns hundreds of local, national, and international digital news outlets including the Wall Street Journal, Fox News, and Sky News Australia. He stepped down as chairperson of Fox and News Corp last year, after seven decades at the helm.
# And finally: A battery-operated spoon that makes food taste saltier has gone on sale in Japan. The spoon is aimed at people struggling to reduce their salt intake. In Japan, adults consume on average of around 10 grams of salt a day, double the recommended intake. The spoon works by passing a weak electric current through the tip of the device to concentrate sodium ion molecules on the tongue. This magnifies the perceived saltiness of the food by one and a half times. Users can choose their preferred intensity from four different levels.
