Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company is celebrating its 96th birthday this month, marking nearly a century of taking visitors to one of the new seven wonders of nature. Since 1929, over 32-million people have enjoyed the scenic ride. Managing director Wahida Parker says the milestone coincides with the Local is Lekker special, offering discounted tickets for South Africans. She emphasised the company continues its conservation, community upliftment, and tourism excellence initiatives ahead of the festive season.
# A film by University of Cape Town medical student Nandipha Zinhle Mthethwa, UBIZO, will have its premier screening at Ster-Kinekor at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town on Sunday. Inspired by personal experiences of loss and ancestral wisdom, the filmmaker blended movement, music, and experimental visuals to bridge Western medicine and spiritual guidance. Mthethwa says the film’s artistic vision is an exploration of grief and pain through the poetic nature of communion between the spiritual and the physical.
# Two North-West University dancers, Tebogo Baas and Matlhogonolo Bodibe, are set to represent South Africa at the 2025 World Dance Championships in Assen, Netherlands, next month. They secured their place in the Youth Championship Latin category after consistent podium finishes and a strong showing in the qualifiers. The pair view their selection as an opportunity to demonstrate the standard of South African dance beyond national borders. Bodibe says preparing for a competition like the Assen event is intense, as it requires daily training to refine technique, stamina and strength.
# Thirty-two schools from across South Africa have been announced as finalists in the National EduPlant School Gardening Competition 2025. They were shortlisted from more than 300 schools onboarded into the EduPlant programme at the start of last year, where they received extensive training in permaculture practices to assist them in growing their own vegetables, fruit, and herbs. The 32 schools shortlisted were singled out for the way learners implemented their newfound knowledge to grow a successful garden. The winners will be announced at a gala event tomorrow evening.
# And finally: Taylor Swift’s newest theatrical effort, The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, topped the global box office charts over the weekend. The 89-minute cinematic experience offers fans behind-the-scenes footage of Swift’s 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl. Paul Thomas Anderson’s critically acclaimed One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, fell to second place, with newcomer Dwayne Johnson’s R-rated sports drama Smashing Machine in third.
