# Thirty-two recipients including anti-apartheid activist Peter Cyril Jones and the Netherlands’s Fulco van Aurich will receive national orders at a ceremony next week Tuesday. National Orders are the highest awards the president gives citizens and eminent foreign nationals. The late Jones, a founding member of the Black Consciousness Movement, will receive the Order of Luthuli in Gold. Van Aurich will receive the Order of the Companions of OR Tambo in Silver for his contribution to promoting awareness of human rights violations by the apartheid government.
# Eleven Tshwane University of Technology researchers have been nominated for the 26th National Science and Technology Forum NSTF Awards. These are the premier research and innovation awards in South Africa. Professor OJ Okonkwo has been nominated for Science Diplomacy for Africa, Lifetime, and Data for Research awards. TUT’s vice-chancellor, professor Tinyiko Maluleke, says the recognition of the eleven is the fruit of the university’s intentional foregrounding of impactful research and problem-solving innovation.
# The Iziko Museums of South Africa is offering free entry to selected museums on Freedom Day on Saturday. The participating museums offering free entrance include the Bo-Kaap Museum, South African National Gallery, the Slave Lodge and the South African Museum in Cape Town. The Iziko Museums of South Africa says from nine in the morning until five in the afternoon, people can explore and engage with the rich cultural and historical heritage sitting within iconic institutions at no cost.
# The Growing Readers with Books project has distributed up to nine-thousand books at Early Child Development centres in Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal and the Western Cape. The initiative, aimed at ensuring direct access to books for young children, was launched last year. Book Dash’s executive director, Julia Norris, says book sharing is more than just reading to a child, it is interactive, follows the child’s interest, and encourages and praises them for participation.
# And finally: The Cape Peninsula University of Technology will confer an honorary doctorate to Banyana Banyana coach, Desiree Ellis, tomorrow. She is the most successful coach in the history of the women’s soccer team, having led the team to their maiden Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title in 2022. Under her leadership, the team also qualified for back-to-back Women’s World Cups. CPUT says Ellis will be recognised for her significant achievements which have positioned her at the top of the African and global sporting fraternity.
