BULLETIN 10 July
Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# The City of Cape Town has welcomed the launch of two new digital visa schemes by the Department of Home Affairs, aimed at boosting the film and events sectors. The Stages visa will ease entry for international film talent, while Meets will streamline visa access for global event attendees. With 36 major bids secured for Cape Town in 2024/25, these initiatives are expected to drive investment, tourism, and job creation, strengthening Cape Town’s position as a global film and event hub
The metro also says four new murals are adorning the walls of facilities in Delft, Grassy Park, Mfuleni and Valhalla Park. This is part of the Community, Arts and Culture Development Department’s drive to enliven public space and support emerging artists. Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham, says the vibrant artworks have not only revitalised buildings, but also put local talent in the spotlight:
# Mdluli Safari Lodge, on the edge of the Kruger National Park next to Numbi Gate, is a working example of a land claim turned into a successful community tourism initiative. Director of the lodge, Chris Schalkwyk, says the vision was birthed by Chief MZ Mdluli. It took four years to get the land back and another 27 years before the lodge could be built due to environmental approvals and raising capital. The lodge currently employs 130 people on a permanent basis.
# The ten-thousand Champions initiative recently launched in Soweto aims at developing ten-thousand purpose-driven, digitally-skilled and economically active youth leaders by 2030. This starts with training the first 100 champions over the next six months on digital and business skills, leadership, community building, and job creation. Founder KK Diaz says this isn’t just a project, it’s a movement to build Africa’s future by investing in the generation that will lead it.
# And finally: The first nominees for the 52nd Daytime Emmys have been announced. The best drama series category is back to just three nominees this year: General Hospital, Days of Our Lives and The Young and the Restless. Four of the six nominated for lead actress in a daytime drama series are from The Young and the Restless, Sharon Case, Eileen Davidson, Melissa Claire Egan, and Michelle Stafford. Nominees for best talk series include The Drew Barrymore Show, The View, and Live with Kelly and Mark.
