# Gauteng Health MEC, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, has congratulated the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital on successfully performing a MitraClip implant procedure. It is now the first healthcare facility in the province to treat leaking hearts with this innovative technique. The department’s spokesperson, Motalatale Modiba, says this breakthrough allows the public health sector to pioneer new ways of improving patient care:
# University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences researchers have implemented the latest technology in cattle feed machinery at the institution’s experimental farm. This is through an investment from the New Zealand government. The university’s professor, Wanda Markotter, says the animals are now equipped with radio frequency identification tags, which trigger the machines to dispense a specialised feed. She adds this research is an important advancement in the fight against global warming, as cattle play an integral role in socio-economic systems in many African cultures.
# The City of Tshwane says it is pleased that its partnership with the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency has managed to create over 400 jobs. Since the start of the programme, seven business support centres have been created across the region with over one-thousand-300 businesses receiving assistance. Mayoral committee member for Economic Development, Sarah Mabotsa, says the initiative has added up to 120-million-rand to the turnover of small businesses.
# Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s Dog Man topped the North American box office over the weekend. The movie about a police officeial who becomes surgically fused to his faithful pup after getting injured on the job, stars Pete Davidson, Poppy Liu, and Ricky Gervais. Coming in second was Spyglass Media Group’s horror-rom-com mashup, Heart Eyes. Love Hurts, led by Oscar-winners Ke Huy Quan and Ariana DeBose, debuted in third place. Mufasa: The Lion King and Companion rounded out the top five.
# And finally: A Don Mattera Activation Exhibition is currently being showcased in Sophiatown, Johannesburg. The exhibition explores the life and work of the late poet and author and also seeks to highlight Sophiatown’s legacy of resilience and cultural significance. Don Mattera Foundation chairperson, Jenny Jeftha, told Newsroom Afrika Mattera’s contributions have greatly shaped the perception of Sophiatown, and preserved its enduring heritage:
