# The South African Weather Service has issued a warning for the possibility of severe thunderstorms in Gauteng today. This could lead to excessive lightning, damaging winds, and heavy downpours. Rain probability is currently at 50-percent. Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, says motorists are urged to exercise caution while driving, including avoiding crossing flooded roads and low-lying bridges:
# The City of Tshwane in partnership with the student environment volunteer group, ASEZ, embarked on a clean-up operation of the Hennops River at the weekend. The river is one of the most polluted rivers in Gauteng. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, mayoral committee member for Environmental and Agriculture, Obakeng Ramabodu, called on the national government to help support clean-up efforts of the river, warning that failure to act could lead to cholera and environmental risks:
# And finally: Mpact Recycling has warned that improper disposal of lithium-ion batteries poses serious environmental risks. Consumers are urged to follow safe disposal methods amid growing demand for these batteries for solar energy use. Managing director John Hunt discourages disposing of the batteries with household waste or recycling bins, as they could catch fire. He has advised instead, that households use hazardous waste collection points or services like Circular Energy. He adds that responsible disposal is vital to protecting ecosystems and human health.
