# Cape Town mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, has welcomed the clean audit opinion awarded to the city by the Auditor General for 2022/23. The city’s draft annual report and financial statements are serving on the City Council’s agenda today. Hill-Lewis says spending public money on its intended purpose is the very foundation of service delivery, and the bedrock of the city’s efforts to ultimately lift more people out of poverty and into work:
# CapeNature says the birth of a unique foal at the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a beacon of hope for Cape mountain zebra conservation. For the last 300 years, the population of the Cape mountain zebra has been under harsh threat due to unchecked hunting and habitat demolition. Conservation initiatives taken by CapeNature in conjunction with other private bodies led to a significant upswing in the zebra population. CapeNature says the birth of this unique foal serves as proof of the enduring resilience of nature when aided by human efforts.
# The University of Pretoria’s interim vice-chancellor, Themba Mosia, says the year-on-year increase in the number of top matric achievers choosing to study at the institution is amazing. Gauteng’s top three 2023 matric students have all chosen to study at the university. Mosia says the institution is ranked in the top one-percent of universities worldwide in ten fields and he is incredibly proud of the brand, reputation and educational quality. He adds that the university positions itself as a future-oriented institution in all the programmes it offers.
# The Sweet Life Diabetes Community’s website is making a significant impact by providing a platform that offers support to people living with diabetes. The platform serves as a hub where people can access valuable resources including free advice, cookbooks, diet guides, and podcasts covering a wide range of diabetes-related topics. The Sweet Life Diabetes Community says its mission is to solve diabetes education in South Africa, empower people with the chronic disease, and bring diabetes into the spotlight.
# And finally: At the age of 80 singer-songwriter, Joni Mitchell, will perform at this year’s Grammy Awards for the very first time. Best known for her hit Big Yellow Taxi, she is a nominee in the Best Folk Album category for her 2023 live album Joni Mitchell at Newport. Nine-time Grammy award winner, Mitchell, was forced to re-learn how to walk, talk and play guitar after suffering a near-fatal brain aneurysm in 2015. The Grammys will take place in Los Angeles on Sunday and will be hosted by comedian Trevor Noah.
