# The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services says firefighters are continuing to battle a large veld fire in the area adjacent to Drakenstein Prison on the R301, between Paarl and Franschhoek. The fire started yesterday afternoon. The municipality’s Jo-Anne Otto says one of the fire lines burning toward the N1 has burnt itself out; but the line burning toward the river remains active:
# The Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute expressed concern over South Africa’s two-trillion-rand Integrated Resource Plan, presented by Electricity minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa. SAFCEI executive director Francesca de Gasparis warns against continued reliance on fossil fuels, gas, and nuclear, citing safety risks and speculative technologies. She urges the minister to focus on renewable energy solutions like solar, wind, and storage that are clean, affordable, and sustainable for the nation’s energy future:
But the South African Young Nuclear Professionals Society has welcomed the release of the updated plan. The plan reaffirms the country’s commitment to a secure, sustainable, and inclusive energy future, one that integrates nuclear energy as a critical pillar in achieving a low-carbon economy. The society’s Emmanuel Montwedi says nuclear power provides stable baseload supply while supporting renewable integration, positioning South Africa among global leaders in clean energy development:
