BULLETIN 4 June 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# A tornado struck Tongaat in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday afternoon, causing extensive damage to roads and infrastructure. The provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs says trees were uprooted, blocking roads and causing major traffic jams. Several vehicles were also damaged, and dozens of residents have been displaced. The department says it is waiting on preliminary reports on the extent of damages.
Meanwhile, the South African Weather Service says the tornado, with disruptive rain and heavy winds, also wreaked havoc in Ballito, and the Durban CBD. No injuries or fatalities were reported. Chief forecaster Kevin Rae says more rain is expected across high-lying parts of the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, including possible snow:
# And finally: The European Climate Foundation says rich people in all countries must pay more to tackle the climate crisis. Poor countries are currently struggling to raise the estimated 23-billion-rand a year of external finance needed to help them cut emissions and cope with the impacts of the climate crisis. The foundation’s CEO, Laurence Tubiana, says the richest one-percent of people in the world are responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than the 66-percent at the other end of the scale.
