# The Eastern Cape government says it’s determined to provide support to families who have lost their homes and possessions, and who are in desperate need of food, water, and shelter. Several parts of the province were hit by heavy rain this weekend. Spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie says the Buffalo City and Nelson Mandela Bay metros are most affected:
# A stingray whose “virgin” pregnancy made global headlines has a rare reproductive disease. In an update on the health of Charlotte the stingray, the Aquarium and Shark Lab in North Carolina says she most likely became pregnant through parthenogenesis, where a female’s egg becomes fertilised by her own cells. Charlotte captured international attention in February when the aquarium said she was carrying between three and four pups despite not encountering a male stingray for eight years. While humans carry their offspring in the uterus, stingrays carry theirs in their backs.
# And finally: A small slice of the highest earners in the UK are responsible for seven times more greenhouse gas emissions from their travel and transport than the average person. A report by the left-leaning IPPR thinktank found the highest earning one-percent with salaries of at least 3.8-million-rand a year, emit at least seven times more from their transport than average earners, and 13 times that of the lowest earners. It comes amid a debate about whether the UK should introduce a levy on frequent fliers in a bid to curb this carbon-intensive form of travel.
