Eco Minute 13:30
BULLETIN 30 April 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# The National Council of Provinces has approved the Climate Change Bill. Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Barbara Creecy highlights that the bill establishes a legal framework to regulate climate change-contributing activities. It aims for an effective response across government and society, ensuring a just transition and seizing green economy opportunities. Creecy says the bill facilitates coordinated climate actions, establishing provincial and municipal forums and clear frameworks for mitigation, adaptation, and financing.
# The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy says the draft Gas Master Plan outlines the role of natural gas in the context of the energy mix and provides policy direction to the industry in South Africa. The draft plan, which has been released for public comment, recommends the country should focus on the importation of liquefied natural gas over the short- to medium-term to meet demand. The department says the draft plan also recognises the critical role of natural gas in the country’s economy.
# And finally: Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink says the 30-million-rand per year the metro spends on clearing illegal dumping sites, are funds that could go to improving other core services. He recently joined the Tswelopele Clean-up Campaign drive in Pretoria North, for a multistakeholder team effort to clean up several areas and open spaces in Ward 2. A total of one-thousand-and-50 bags of waste were collected. Brink says a collaborative effort is needed to curb littering and illegal dumping.
