Eco Minute 13:30
BULLETIN 22 April 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# Today marks World Earth Day, a reminder of the importance of environment conservation and sustainability. This year’s theme is Planet versus Plastics, which calls on government leaders, businesses, and ordinary people to work towards reducing plastic production by 60-percent by 2040. Earthday.org is working with Malaysian organisations to host the largest cleanup in Earth Day history this year. At least 100-thousand volunteers will clean up beaches and forests and also plant more than one million trees.
Meanwhile, Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink is set to launch the A Re Jwaleng greening campaign at Tshwane House to mark Earth Day. The Let’s Plant commemoration will see the planting of three thousand trees across the Metro, with a goal of planting 300-thousand trees within three years. The initiative aims to mitigate the impacts of climate change, enhance carbon offsetting potential, improve air quality, and reduce urban heat stress.
# And finally, Stellenbosch University says it will raise awareness for waste reduction on campus through two waste installations on the Rooiplein and at the Engineering Faculty. Last year the institution diverted more than one-thousand tonnes of waste collected on three of its five campuses away from landfills. The university aims to get to zero-waste-to-landfill by 2028. It adds that as part of its efforts towards a greener future, it has invested heavily in various energy, water, waste, and biodiversity programmes on all its campuses.
