# The Motor Industry Staff Association says South Africa’s doctor-to-population ratio is dangerously low, with just 0.3 doctors per one-thousand people, far below international standards. During a webinar on National Health Insurance governance, Health minister Aaron Motsoaledi urged labour unions to support the NHI, while Finance minister Enoch Godongwana confirmed only 800 of one-thousand-800 unemployed doctors can be employed. The association’s Sonja Carstens warns that the shortage must be addressed before the NHI rollout.
