# Deputy president Paul Mashatile says Government has been working to increase access to clean and safe drinking water for all households. The number of households with access to improved water sources, increased from around 60-percent in 1994 to around 82.4-percent in 2022. Mashatile told the National Sanitation and Water Indaba in Midrand that 19-percent of the rural population in the country lacked access to a reliable water supply, and 33-percent do not have basic sanitation services:
