# Hong Kong’s League of Social Democrats says that it would disband amid immense political pressure from a five year-long national security crackdown. This leaves the China-ruled city with no formal pro-democracy opposition presence. The League is the third major opposition party to shut its doors in Hong Kong in the past two years. Chairperson Chan Po-ying told Reuters after considering the safety of party members it had decided to shut down. China imposed imposed stringent national security laws on the former British colony in 2020, with possible life imprisonment.
