Global airline baggage handling improves despite Africa challenges

# The global rate of mishandled airline baggage fell by 23-percent last year, according to SITA’s Baggage IT Insights Report 2026. Africa recorded the highest overall mishandled baggage rate at 12.1 bags per one-thousand passengers, mainly on international flights. However, the continent ranked second best globally for domestic baggage handling. SITA says better baggage tracking, artificial intelligence and integrated airport technology can reduce losses, improve efficiency and help airports manage growing passenger demand.
