# The Gauteng Department of Health is strengthening access to life-saving organ transplant services at the province’s academic hospitals. Between 2021 and this year, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital recorded 125 kidney and liver transplant recipients, while Steve Biko Academic Hospital recorded 31 kidney transplant recipients. The department’s Steve Mabona also promotes organ donation and encourages residents to consider registering as donors to help patients waiting for life-saving transplants:
