# KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi urges residents in the northern parts of the province to exercise extreme caution, as dry conditions and strong winds of up to 50 kilometres per hour have created a high risk of veld fires. Municipalities at particular risk include Abaqulusi, Jozini, Newcastle, Nkandla, and uLundi. The department’s Senzelwe Mzila advises avoiding open flames, ensuring all fires are fully extinguished, and reporting any smoke immediately:
