# The Eastern Cape government has strongly condemned the planned shutdown action by taxi industry operators today, who are part of the government scholar transport programme. This follows a lengthy period of nonpayment, with some operators reporting they have not received payment for up to six months. The provincial government’s spokesperson, Khuselwa Rantjie, says such a shutdown will not only infringe on people’s right of movement, but will also negatively impact scores of taxi operators, who have private contracts:
