# Union federation Cosatu says tensions between tripartite alliance partners the ANC and South African Communist Party only serve to weaken and not strengthen or unite the alliance. At the root of the tensions is the SACP’s decision to contest the local government elections independently for the first time. Cosatu’s Matthew Parks says if the tensions are not resolved with the necessary political maturity and strategic foresight, the very survival of the alliance could be potentially threatened:
