# The City of Cape Town is currently processing high volumes of applications from pensioners, social grant recipients and indigent residents, who have re-applied for rates rebate relief. The metro has proposed more than 8.3-billion-rand in social assistance to qualifying pensioners and indigent residents for the current financial year. Mayoral committee member for Finance, Siseko Mbandezi, says it is necessary to re-apply for assistance as the metro is legally bound to check the financial status of beneficiaries:
