# Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says the reinstatement of the rail central line is a key milestone towards the future devolution of passenger rail services to the metro. The central line has been shut down for four years due to cable theft and vandalism. Its reopening comes after extensive repair work on stations, substations and overhead traction electrification systems. The process of recovering the central line corridor has so far cost 1.3-billion-rand. Hill-Lewis says having good public transport is essential:
