# AfriForum says Emalahleni residents should not have to pay for environmental crimes committed by municipal officials. The High Court in Mpumalanga recently fined the municipality 650-million-rand for discharging raw sewage into the Olifants River between 2019 and this year. AfriForum’s Marais de Vaal warns that the fine will be funded by municipal budgets, diverting funds from basic services.
