# The ACDP says the Army is not winning the fight against the zama zamas in Johannesburg
# And rugby: Embrose Papier is named South Africa’s United Rugby Championship Player of the Season
# President Cyril Ramaphosa’s application to review and set aside Parliament’s Section 89 panel’s Phala Phala report is set to be heard in the Western Cape High court in early September. The case relates to the Constitutional Court judgement that Parliament’s December 2022 decision to reject the panel’s report was invalid and unconstitutional. Ramaphosa has argued the findings were flawed. The hearing is expected to revisit legal and constitutional questions surrounding Parliament’s handling of the matter.
Ramaphosa meanwhile says Africa needs equitable access to climate finance and technology to support a just energy transition. He was speaking during his Kenyan counterpart, William Ruto’s state visit. Ramaphosa says both nations can lead the continent in artificial intelligence, fintech and inclusive economic growth. He says they have agreed African nations must work together to find solutions for African problems, including migration:
# The African Christian Democratic Party says zama zamas are threatening law and order in Johannesburg. Illegal miners are tunnelling under the city, forcing businesses and residents to spend money on emergency repairs and temporary infrastructure to keep operating. ACDP’s Chris Rohlssen says it’s clear the South African National Defence Force is not winning the fight against removing illegal mining syndicates from the metro:
# Rugby: The Bulls’ Springbok scrumhalf Embrose Papier has been rewarded for this excellent form by being named South Africa’s United Rugby Championship Player of the Season. His selection was determined by votes from the Springbok coaching team, the four franchise coaches and selected South African broadcast commentators. The Western Cape-born scrumhalf was just 21 when he made his Test debut against Wales in 2018. Winners from the previous seasons are Evan Roos, Manie Libbok, Sanele Nohamba, and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-25-cents and the euro at 18-rand-91-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-86-cents and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-644-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-492-dollars-28-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 93-dollars-87-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The Electoral Commission has welcomed the premiere of Beats for My Peeps on SABC 1. The ten-episode electoral education television programme forms part of the IEC’s broader voter education and democracy participation campaign ahead of November’s local government elections. The show features content creators from across the country, sharing their experiences and teaching new voters what to expect during election season. The IEC says it is important to educate voters about their rights.
