# The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure has activated a comprehensive operational plan following unrest in parts of the country linked to undocumented migrants. The plan focuses on three key areas: enhanced visibility and rapid deployment capabilities, intelligence-led operations, and targeted crime-combatting operations. Hotspots, including the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape, are being monitored. Acting National Police Commissioner, Puleng Dimpane, says no circumstance can justify murder, destruction of property, xenophobic attacks, or any other criminal conduct:
Dimpane also says government is not turning a blind eye to illegal immigration. In the past three weeks alone, more than five-thousand illegal immigrants have been arrested for contravening the Immigration Act. Since January this year, law enforcement operations conducted across the country have resulted in the arrest of 34-thousand-798 illegal immigrants. Dimpane says police remain firmly in control of the security environment of the country:
# The minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, has welcomed Telkom’s annual financial results for the year ended 31 March 2026. Malatsi says the results reflect the success of the company’s transformation strategy and continued growth in the telecommunications sector. Telkom reported improved earnings and strong cash flow performance, enabling it to increase its dividend payout. The minister says the results highlight the importance of sustainable investment in digital infrastructure and support government’s goal of expanding connectivity and driving economic growth.
# South African National Parks says more than 50-million-rand has been given to small businesses that supply goods and services within its procurement ecosystem. In partnership with Sanlam and I am an entrepreneur, the interest-free loans help businesses meet orders and manage cash flow. The initiative, which started as a ten-million-rand pilot in 2023, has helped create jobs, grow businesses and support economic inclusion. SANParks remains committed to expanding access to finance for more small businesses.
# The World Health Organisation says its ability to respond effectively to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda is being hindered by blanket travel restrictions. The US, Bahrain, Mexico, and other countries have imposed travel restrictions, while Canada is enforcing a 21-day quarantine for all travellers arriving from the DRC. Over 300 confirmed Ebola cases and over 60 deaths have been recorded. WHO director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has highlighted high levels of community mistrust and low levels of contact tracing as major concerns.
# Golf: Six-time major champion Rory McIlroy is aiming for his first-ever victory at the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament, which kicks off at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio, today. The Northern Irishman’s best finish at the tournament was when he finished tied for fourth in 2016. McIlroy, who clinched back-to-back Masters victories in April, admitted that the layout at Muirfield Village does not necessarily favour his game, saying he believes success will hinge on tweaking his natural game:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-35-cents and the euro at 18-rand-97-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-94-cents and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-964-dollars.
