# Gun Free South Africa says firearm licence applications have risen sharply in recent years, as concerns about crime, violence, and personal safety have driven more South Africans to own guns. The Firearms Control Amendment Bill, which proposes that self-defence should no longer be considered a valid reason for owning a firearm, was referred back for further consultation following public opposition. Gun Free SA executive director, Stanley Maphosa, says owning a firearm does not automatically make people safer, stressing the importance of secure firearm storage.
