In this bulletin:
# Rise Mzansi says Makashule Gana will ensure fairness in the impeachment committee
# Iran suspends its peace talks with the US until the cessation of Israel’s attacks on Lebanon
# And soccer: Bafana Bafana departs for the World Cup without their assistant coach
# Rise Mzansi says the election of its member of Parliament, Makashule Gana, as chairperson of the Section 89 impeachment committee marks an important step for accountability in Parliament. The party states the committee must work fairly, seriously and in line with the Constitution, without political interference. Rise Mzansi’s Mabine Seabe says Gana brings strong legislative experience, integrity and a deep understanding of parliamentary processes:
Meanwhile, ActionSA has expressed disappointment over the election of an ANC-sponsored candidate as chairperson of the Parliament’s impeachment committee. The party’s Lerato Ngobeni says the process should have been led by an independent opposition figure to ensure impartiality and fairness. Ngobeni believes the committee, which will determine whether there are grounds for the removal of a sitting president, must be free from political influence to maintain public confidence. She urged the committee to remain fair and transparent.
# The ANC Women’s League says its president Sisisi Tolashe will take a leave of absence while she faces disciplinary proceedings within the ANC. The decision follows a special national executive committee meeting. Tolashe is accused of taking two luxury vehicles that were donated to the women’s league for personal use. The league’s secretary-general, Nokuthula Nqaba, will take over leadership duties in the interim, urging members to remain disciplined:
# Acting National Commissioner, Puleng Dimpane, has deployed a National Forensic Task Team, together with Crime Intelligence experts, to investigate the explosions that occurred at Woolworths stores in Gauteng and the Free State last week. The first explosion took place at Woolworths Menlyn Park in Pretoria on Thursday, and the second less than 24-hours later at the Preller Square branch in Bloemfontein. Police say investigations are currently at a very early stage, adding that it is too early to classify the incidents as acts of terrorism.
# Iran has halted peace talks with the US due to the widening Israeli assault on Lebanon. This comes amid a broadening wave of Israeli attacks across southern Lebanon after prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the military would deepen its offensive against the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. According to Iranian state media, Tehran will move to completely block limited access to the Strait of Hormuz and activate other fronts. At least three-thousand-433 people have been killed and ten-thousand-395 wounded in Israeli attacks on Lebanon since March 2nd.
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana departed for their World Cup training base in Pachuca, Mexico, yesterday without assistant coach Helkman Mkhalele. He is still waiting for his visas to be processed by the US Embassy. The squad was originally set to depart on Sunday, but was held back by a delay in obtaining visas in what has been described as an administrative bungle by the South African Football Association. SAFA president Danny Jordaan says hopefully, Mkhalele’s visa issue will be finalised speedily:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-30-cents and the euro at 18-rand-96-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-93-cents and Bitcoin trades at 71-thousand-317-dollars.
