# AZAPO says South Africans cannot feel safe when allegations persist that senior police officials are themselves connected to criminal networks operating within the country. Spokesperson Nosipiwo Manona says a police service that is compromised at the top cannot effectively protect ordinary citizens at the grassroots level. She says five-thousand deaths in just three months is not merely a statistic; it is a national tragedy:
Meanwhile, the Western Cape premier, Alan Winde is warning that the levels of violence crime remain unacceptably high in the province. The latest police crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2025/2026 financial year show that murders in the province decreased by 8-percent, from one-thousand-068 cases between January and March 2025, to 983 cases for the same period this year. Winde says gang violence is a serious concern, accounting for the majority of murders in this region:
# Acting national police commissioner, Puleng Dimpane has called for a manhunt following an armed robbery and housebreaking incident at the home of former Cabinet minister, Naledi Pandor in Pretoria. Police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe says three armed suspects forced entry into the property on Friday night and allegedly held occupants at gunpoint before ransacking the property and fleeing with valuables. She says police are working around the clock to trace and apprehend those responsible.
# A suspect was killed on Saturday evening in Washington DC after he opened fire on Secret Service agents in the streets surrounding the White House. According to a US Secret Service statement a man started firing on its agents in the vicinity of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. Secret Service police returned fire and struck the suspect who were pronounced dead in hospital. No Secret Service agents were injured but a bystander was struck by gunfire. CBS has since reported the suspect was Nasire Best, a 21-year-old man who was already known to the Secret Service.
# And motorsport: Britain’s George Russell powered to pole position on Saturday for the Canadian Grand Prix ahead of Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli. The two McLarens of British reigning world champion Lando Norris and Australian Oscar Piastri will start from the second row, Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton will start from fifth, with four-time world champion Max Verstappen in sixth. Russell earlier won the sprint race from pole position with Formula One leader Kimi Antonelli third and crying foul. The scrap required an intervention from Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, who told Antonelli to concentrate on driving and not moan on the radio.
