Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, we have soccer news: Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has announced a 32-man preliminary squad for the World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico. There are seven overseas-based players in the squad, including Lyle Foster and Olwethu Makhanya. Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates have nine players each, and Bradley Cross and Olwethu Makhanye are among the fresh faces selected. Broos will announce the final squad on Wednesday. South Africa is in Group A alongside co-hosts Mexico, South Korea and the Czech Republic.
# Rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus says their latest alignment camp in Cape Town was a success, with players fully aligned with the structures and systems. The squad comprised 40 players, including ten uncapped players. Another training camp will be held next month in preparation for the season-opening double-header between the Springboks and the Barbarians, and the SA ‘A’ team against Zimbabwe. Erasmus says most of the camp’s goals have been achieved:
Staying with rugby: The Junior Springboks opened the Under-20 International Series with a commanding 97-0 victory over Chile at Rondebosch Boys’ High School in Cape Town. South Africa scored 15 tries, including hat-tricks from Lindsey Jansen and Risima Khosa, with Vusi Moyo kicking 22 points in a one-sided affair. Coach Kevin Foote says despite the lopsided score, the outing still offered valuable lessons. In their opening game, Georgia beat Fiji by 29-23. The Junior Boks will next face Fiji at Wynberg Boys’ High School on Tuesday, while Chile will take on Georgia.
# Cricket: Gujarat Titans recorded an emphatic 89-run victory over Chennai Super Kings to strengthen their push for a top-two finish in the Indian Premier League. Chasing a crucial win that would improve their chances of securing two shots at the final through Qualifier One, the Titans posted 229 for four. Opener Sai Sudharsan top-scored with 84. In reply, Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada took three wickets each, as CSK was bowled out for 140, marking the end of their campaign, with their elimination now officially confirmed.
# And tennis: Top seed Jannik Sinner will face local wild card Clement Tabur in the first round of the French Open. Potential opponents on the Italian’s path include American Ben Shelton and Russia’s Daniil Medvedev. On the other side of the draw, three-time champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia begins his latest bid for a 25th Grand Slam title against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Djokovic is in the same half as Norwegian Casper Ruud and Germany’s Alexander Zverev. Frenchman Gael Monfils, who is competing in his final season on Tour, will face compatriot Hugo Gaston.
