# The MK Party has removed its national spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela
# ActionSA is calling for a broader rethink of the principles underpinning National Health Insurance
# And, the police are investigating a deadly shooting at the Islamic Centre of San Diego
# The MK Party has removed national spokesperson and member of Parliament, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, with immediate effect. He has been replaced by Sifiso Mahlangu, who recently vacated his position as the editor of The Star newspaper. At the weekend, Ndhlela read out a statement suggesting the newly formed MK Institute would assume full control over the party’s leadership structures. Secretary General Sibonelo Nomvalo says the institute lacked the constitutional authority to change the roles of national officials or subject party structures to its oversight:
# ActionSA says the Constitutional Court’s declaration of key provisions of the National Health Act unconstitutional marks a significant victory against state overreach. The invalidated Sections 36 to 40 of the Act provided for the controversial “Certificate of Need”. This is a mechanism through which the state would effectively control where doctors, dentists, nurses, and other healthcare practitioners could work. ActionSA says this judgment reaffirms that quality healthcare cannot be achieved through coercion, bureaucracy, and centralised state control. The party is calling for a broader rethink of the principles underpinning the NHI.
# The IFP has expelled former King Cetshwayo District Municipality councillor Sipho Mbatha with immediate effect. The decision follows allegations that Mbatha was involved in extortion, allegedly collecting money from individuals while claiming to act on behalf of the party. The party’s Mkhuleko Hlengwa says the IFP’s national council unanimously resolved to remove Mbatha from the party and as a proportional representation councillor:
# San Diego Police are investigating a deadly shooting at the Islamic Centre of San Diego in California as a hate crime. Three people, including a security guard, were killed in the shooting. Two teenage suspects were found dead in a car nearby with self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The ICSD is the largest mosque in San Diego County. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl says before they received reports of shots being fired at the centre, a mother called authorities to report her son missing:
# Cricket: Sunrisers Hyderabad booked their place in the Indian Premier League play-offs with a five-wicket victory over the Chennai Super Kings. Pat Cummins took three wickets as CSK were restricted to 180 for seven, with Dewald Brevis top-scoring with 44 off 27 balls. In reply, Ishan Kishan scored 70, and Heinrich Klaasen 45, as the pair also shared a 75-run partnership in 41 balls to lead the Sunrisers to victory. The win for the Sunrisers also took the Gujarat Titans into the playoffs.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-63-cents and the euro at 19-rand-37-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-32-cents, and Bitcoin trades at 76-thousand-696-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-459-dollars-31-cents a fine ounce, and Brent crude oil is quoted at 106-dollars-47-cents a barrel.
