# The Public Protector says the Consitutional Court’s judgment does not overturn its Phala Phala report
# Ramaphosa says all levels of government are responding to the weather disaster in several provinces
# And soccer: SAFA will soon begin the process of finding Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos’ successor
# The Public Protector says the Constitutional Court’s judgment on the Phala Phala matter does not assess or overturn its report, and it makes no findings on the issues investigated. The court ruled Parliament had acted unlawfully when it voted to reject an independent panel’s report in 2022. The panel found Ramaphosa may have violated his oath of office. Spokesperson Ndili Msoki says the court dealt solely with the constitutionality of Parliament’s Section 89 process:
Meanwhile, the Freedom Front Plus says Ramaphosa’s decision to take the panel’s report on review nearly four years later, is clearly a desperate attempt to save himself. The FF Plus says the entire matter has become more about preserving the ANC.
# Ramaphosa has meanwhile assured the nation all levels of government are responding to the devastating and severe weather events affecting several provinces. At least ten people have died as torrential rain, flooding and strong winds have caused widespread damage and disruptions in the Western Cape, the Northern Cape and the Eastern Cape. Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, says a national state of disaster has been declared in response to the loss of life and infrastructure damage:
Moving abroad:
# Israeli lawmakers have passed a new law which allows for the setting up of a special tribunal to impose the death penalty on Palestinians convicted of taking part in the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023. At least one-thousand-139 people were killed in the attack in southern Israel, while another 251 were kidnapped and held in captivity in Gaza. This triggered the Gaza war, which has already claimed the lives of over 72-thousand people. This legislation is separate from the Death Penalty for Terrorists Law which was passed in March.
# Soccer: Local governing body SAFA will soon begin the search for a new Bafana Bafana head coach. Hugo Broos, who is now in his fifth and final year with the national team, has indicated he will step down after the World Cup, starting in North America next month. The chairperson of SAFA’s Technical Committee, Jack Maluleke, says they aim to have the new coach ready immediately after the World Cup:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-57-cents and the euro at 19-rand-46-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-42-cents and Bitcoin trades at 80-thousand-943-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-693-dollars-89-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 104-dollars-15-cents a barrel.
