Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with rugby: Tuks from the University of Pretoria secured a record-breaking sixth Varsity Cup title with a dominant 31-3 victory over the North West University’s Eagles. The homeside led 10-3 at the break at the Tuks Stadium in Pretoria. Tuks scored three tries with Divan du Toit slotting three penalties, while the Eagles could only score a first-half penalty through MJ Mostert. Tuks is now the most decorated team in the tournament, while Stellenbosch University-Maties has five titles.
Sevens rugby news: Springbok player David Brits says even though they have won this year’s World Sevens Series, they are starting afresh in the first of three World Championship tournaments in Hong Kong this weekend. The other two tournaments will be held in Valladolid, Spain, and Bordeaux, France, before a grand champion is crowned. The Blitzboks face Argentina, Spain, and Uruguay in Pool A in Hong Kong. Brits say they are ready for the challenge:
# Cricket: Former Lions player Beyers Swanepoel is free to play county cricket for Worcestershire after receiving a no objection certificate from Cricket South Africa. He was in limbo after being sacked by the Lions for leaving midway through the One-day Cup final against the Titans to catch a flight to Britain. This left his team with just ten players and they eventually lost the match. CSA says it is contractually obligated to grant Swanepoel the certificate after he and the Lions reached a mutual termination agreement.
Other cricket news: Punjab Kings are now the only undefeated team left in the Indian Premier League after Rajasthan Royals’ unblemished record came to a stuttering halt. Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a very competitive 216 for six and immediately struck when Praful Hinge claimed three wickets in his very first over. Rajasthan was tethering on nine for five when South African Donovan Ferreira and Ravindra Jadeja built an 118-run sixth-wicket partnership. But that wasn’t enough, and Hyderabad won by 57 runs. Rajasthan is still top of the log, and Punjab second.
# And swimming: Russian and Belarusian athletes will now be permitted to compete in World Aquatics events under their own flags and anthems. Competitors from both countries were banned from international sports events following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Athletes from the two countries will only be permitted to compete once they have passed four successive anti-doping controls and completed background checks. World Aquatics says over the past three years, work has been done to ensure conflict can be kept outside the sporting competition venues.
