Gauteng schools face severe overcrowding crisis [SOUND]

# Gauteng MEC for Education Lebogang Maile has warned of severe overcrowding in township and inner-city schools, with some classrooms accommodating 60-to-70-learners per teacher. Maile told a media briefing today rising learner numbers, ageing infrastructure, and limited new school construction are worsening conditions. Only 48-schools were built or refurbished between 2015 and 2024. Despite ongoing infrastructure spending in disadvantaged areas, Maile says shortages of desks and chairs persist, while funding constraints continue to delay delivery:
