# A new Ipsos poll reveals that support for the ANC has fallen to about 33-percent among all eligible voters in South Africa. The survey highlights shifting political sentiment ahead of upcoming local government elections, with the ANC’s backing significantly below majority levels. Analysts say the results reflect voter dissatisfaction and could signal a more competitive electoral landscape as other parties vie for influence as coalition possibilities grow.
# The founder of the Road Ethics Project, Lee Randall, has urged motorists to adopt ethical driving habits to reduce road accidents this Easter weekend. Authorities are intensifying crackdowns on drunk driving nationwide. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, Randall welcomed increased law enforcement visibility, including night patrols, but warns human behaviour remains a key risk. She emphasises the need for ethical awareness and improved road design to enhance overall safety:
# Motorists have been warned of heavy traffic on key routes as travelers return from the Easter holiday. Significant congestion is expected on the N3 route between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, the N1 north towards Gauteng, and the R71 from Moria in Limpopo. Authorities say peak travel will occur before schools re-open with risks including fatigue, bad weather, and accidents. Drivers are urged to plan ahead, avoid night travel, and maintain safe following distances.
# Education activist Hendrick Makaneta is urging the Department of Basic Education to uphold the rights and dignity of pregnant learners. He says schools must remain inclusive and ensure learners are not excluded due to pregnancy, as this violates both policy and the Constitution. Makaneta adds teachers should be supported with proper training and resources, and should not bear the burden alone while safeguarding learners’ access to education:
# US President Donald Trump has published another post on social media in which he threatened to destroy Iran’s power plants and bridges if it failed to meet his Tuesday deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump’s new threat came after he announced the second crew member of a US fighter jet downed over Iran had been successfully rescued. Both the US and Iran had scrambled to locate the US serviceman in a mountainous region Iran. The pilot of the F-15 had been recovered shortly after the aircraft was shot down on Friday.
# Rugby: Former Springbok Franco Smith is touted as a possible head coach of Scotland after next year’s World Cup in Australia. He had coaching roles in the Free State, Treviso in Italy and Italy’s national team before moving to Glasgow Warriors in Scotland. Smith led the team to a United Rugby Championship crown and the final of the Challenge Cup. Glasgow beat the Bulls in the cup’s round of 16 on Saturday. Scotland’s current head coach, Gregor Townsend, is linked to a move to Newcastle Red Bulls next year.
