# Cabinet has condemned the reported coronation of a Nigerian national as a chief in KuGompo City in the Eastern Cape, calling it unlawful and without legal standing. Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, says traditional leadership is strictly regulated under the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act. Cabinet noted an apology from the Nigerian High Commission and urged continued diplomatic engagement. She warned against violence linked to the incident:
# The Special Tribunal has set aside a controversial 14-million-rand Covid-19 Personal Protective Equipment tender linked to ANC’s Nomvula Mokonyane’s daughter, Katleho Mokonyane and her business partner, Bonelela Mgudlwa through their company Tark Group. The contracts, awarded through the Mpumalanga Health Department were declared unlawful due to irregularities. The company benefited from failures in procurement processes and compliance. SIU spokesperson Selby Makgotho says the duo must repay the money to the state:
# Econometrix chief economist Azar Jammine has welcomed the appointment of Johnstone Makhubu as SARS Commissioner, describing it as a merit-based decision. Speaking to SABC News, Jammine said Makhubu’s experience and competence position him well to lead the institution. He noted SARS has recovered from past challenges and is on an upward path, but still faces hurdles, including tackling tax evasion and adapting to new technologies in a complex economic environment:
# The Western Cape Government has committed 15-million-rand to upgrade the Newlands Cricket Ground and Boland Park in Paarl ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027. Bondi was regarded as a longtime ally and fierce defender of his administration. Trump praised her in a post on Truth Social and said she would be “transitioning” to a role in the private sector. Bondi’s time leading the Justice Department was often overshadowed by its handling of the release of files relating to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Bondi will be replaced by her former deputy, Todd Blanche.
# And, rugby: Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth, returns to the Sharks for their Challenge Cup round 16 clash against Connacht in Galway this evening. This comes after completing a 12-match suspension for an eye-gouging incident against Wales. He is one of 13 changes that head coach JP Petersen made to the starting line-up. Eighthman Nick Hatton captains the side, remaining as one of only two players alongside Makazole Mapimpi to retain his starting spot. Youngster Hakeem Kunene starts at fullback to address a significant injury crisis in that position. Kick off is at 9 pm.
