# The International Court of Justice has ruled in favour of South Africa and demanded Israel, among others, to try to contain death and damage in the Gaza Strip but stopped short of ordering a ceasefire.
# The DA commends the ministry of Employment and Labour’s decision to collaborate on an implementation agreement for sharing employment data between the South African Revenue Service and the Unemployment Insurance Fund. Currently, SARS collects 98-percent of UIF contributions, but the comprehensive payroll data is not shared. The proposed joint agreement seeks to streamline processes, eliminate manual submissions, and improve UIF claim processing. The DA’s Traverse Le Goff urges the department to expedite talks with SARS to finalise data-sharing terms.
# The University of Johannesburg says a place at the university is not guaranteed due to limited space to accommodate all applicants who meet the minimum requirements. UJ registrar Bettine van Vuuren has acknowledged that some students have expressed frustration after being removed from courses they had initially been accepted for. Additionally, Van Vuuren has highlighted the implementation of facial recognition as a strict security measure for secure registration, making UJ the first South African university to adopt this technology:
# Police in Mpumalanga are investigating the fatal shooting of a female mine manager. The 27-year-old victim was about to leave for work when the incident took place. According to a police report, she was found with bullet wounds on her upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene. The motive behind the killing is yet to be determined, and no arrests have been made thus far. Provincial police commissioner Semakaleng Manamela has condemned the incident and called for swift investigations into the matter.
# Soccer: Jürgen Klopp has unexpectedly announced his resignation as manager of Liverpool at the end of the season. He was appointed in October and his contract only expires in 2026. The 56-year-old German says he had already informed the English club in November, explaining he was running out of energy. Under Klopp’s guidance, Liverpool won six trophies, including the Champions League title in 2019 and the Premier League title the following year. The team currently leads the Premier League and also qualified for the final of the Carabao Cup.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-81-cents and the euro at 20-rand-45-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-96-cents and Bitcoin trades at 41-thousand-338-dollars-49-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-and-23-dollars-24-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 81-dollars-72-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Two South African learners have earned the opportunity to exhibit their scientific proficiency at the 2024 Taiwan International Science Fair. A Grade 12 learner at Zinniaville Secondary School in the North West, Lethabo Molobi, and a Grade 11 learner at Hoërskool Jim Fouché in the Free State, Jaco Deysel, were picked following their outstanding performance at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair last year.
