# Industry body Wines of South Africa‘s Export Report states the value of wine exports surged to ten-billion-rand in 2023, compared to 9.9-billion-rand in 2022. The report notes a global oversupply affecting pricing, particularly in the lower- and entry-level wine segments. Wines of South Africa CEO, Siobhan Thompson, commends South African wines’ international acclaim, saying it is solidifying the country’s market presence. However, Thompson acknowledges challenges, including infrastructure issues at the Port of Cape Town, which are impacting local producers.
# The University of the Witwatersrand says doctors Saeideh Babaee, Ashley Coates, Isaac Nape, and Matt Noakes, are the 2024 Friedel Sellschop Fellows. The fellowships, worth up to 145-thousand-rand each per annum for three years, are awarded to recognise and encourage exceptional early-stage researchers. Babaee is a lecturer in the School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering. Her research is titled Innovative approaches to hydrogen storage including gas hydrates and solid adsorption technologies.
# TuksSport High School’s matric class maintained a proud tradition by achieving a 100-percent pass rate, the 18th time in 21 years the school has achieved this milestone. A total of 83-percent of the 48 learners obtained a Bachelor’s pass this year. In total, they have achieved 38 distinctions and 78 Bs. The school’s principal, Hettie de Villiers, says while the final results open the door to tertiary studies or job opportunities, it is what the learners choose to do with those opportunities that will lead to success.
# The nominations for the 55th National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People, NACCP, Image Awards have been announced with Colman Domingo and Ayo Edebiri leading the pack. The awards honour the best in black filmmaking, writing, music, and more. Domingo is nominated for three awards including outstanding actor in a motion picture for Rustin, while Edebiri has received two nods, including for outstanding supporting actress for The Bear. In the music categories, Victoria Monét leads the way with six nominations. The awards ceremony will be held on the 16th of March.
# And finally: A retirement home for elderly dogs, Silver Paws Senior Sanctuary, offers a haven for ageing canines to live out their remaining years. Co-founders Salomé Meyer-Louwrens and Gerrie Louwrens explain the kennel-free sanctuary welcomes senior dogs needing a peaceful environment during their twilight years. Other services the sanctuary provides to the dogs include medical care for heart conditions and arthritis, deworming, flea and tick treatments, and vaccinations.
