# The ANC says the struggle against crime is far from over
# Herman Mashaba is ActionSA’s mayoral candidate for Johannesburg
# And, deadly explosions in western Ukraine are investigated as ‘terrorist attacks’
# The ANC says the country’s struggle against crime is far from over. The crime statistics for the third quarter of 2025/2026 financial year show an 8.7-percent decrease in murder, 11.3-percent decrease in robbery with aggravating circumstances, and 8.1-percent decrease in hijacking . ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu says the declining trends demonstrate that when strategy meets execution, results follow:
Meanwhile the Forum for South Africa is calling on government to develop a comprehensive national crime emergency strategy to combat crime in the country. FOSA leader, Tebogo Mashilompane, says while government continues to present crime statistics as a demonstration of transparency, South Africans are living under siege. He says communities across the country are terrorised daily by criminals, organised syndicates, drug lords, illegal firearms and repeat offenders who operate without fear of consequences:
# ActionSA president Herman Mashaba will be the party’s mayoral candidate for the City of Johannesburg in the upcoming local government elections. Mashaba was the city’s mayor between 2016 and 2019 under a DA ticket. In his acceptance speech Mashaba said ActionSA offers voters the opportunity to stop the collapse of Johannesburg. He launched Operation Fix Joburg as part of his campaign:
# The civil rights organisation, AfriForum has welcomed president Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision not to promulgate any articles of the National Health Insurance Act, until a ruling is made in public participation cases against the law. AfriForum’s Louis Boshoff says this shows Ramaphosa is thinking twice about implementing the NHI:
# At least one person was killed and dozens more injured in explosions that hit the western Ukrainian city of Lviv earlier today, in what authorities have labelled a terrorist attack. The first explosion at a store near the city centre occurred after police arrived at the scene and was followed by another after the arrival of a second crew. A 23-year-old policewoman was killed while a patrol car and a civilian vehicle were damaged. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s capital city Kyiv was under a combined missile and drone attack overnight.
# And finally tennis: Carlos Alcaraz was at his devastating best on Saturday as he claimed the Qatar Open title with a ruthless 6-2, 6-1 win over Arthur Fils. The seven-time Grand Slam champion needed just over 50 minutes to see off his French opponent and claim the 26th title of his career. The Doha victory follows his Australian Open success earlier this month, where he completed his career Grand Slam at just 22 years of age. It was his first tournament since Melbourne and he extended his match-winning streak to 12.
