# South African National Parks has commended the SANParks Honorary Rangers for their significant contribution of 80-million-rand last year, to projects making a difference in national parks. The honorary rangers contributed a total of 313-thousand hours of duties to SANParks totalling an average of 155 hours of duty per member. SANParks Honorary Rangers, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary, is a volunteer organisation that is open to anyone with a passion for nature and a dedication to supporting it.
# AfriForum Centurion branch’s neighbourhood team and members of the Kloofsig community cleaned up more than a tonne of waste in the small neighbourhood this past weekend. The cleaning action stems from the initiative that the Kloofsig community itself took to clean up their neighbourhood. AfriForum’s Dewet Ungerer says clean-up actions like this have many benefits for a community:
# The City of Cape Town has collaborated with Gift of the Givers to provide essential assistance to learners and their families affected by last month’s fire that swept through Hillview informal settlement. The humanitarian non-governmental organisation provides school supplies, including stationery, benefiting 400 to 500 children at the start of each school year. Mayoral committee member for Human Settlements, Carl Pophaim, says the city will continue its collaborative efforts with partners to assist disaster victims:
# Four new emperor penguin colonies have been identified in Antarctica from satellite imagery. It brings the number of known nesting sites around the White Continent to 66. With the discoveries, scientists believe they now know the whereabouts of all the world’s remaining breeding pairs. According to the BBC, it is vital information for conservationists monitoring a species that’s under increasing pressure as a result of climate change.
# And finally: Media company Time Out has named New York City as its best city in the world for this year. Cape Town, with its stunning combination of sea, cityscape and spectacular mountainous surroundings, has been named as the second-best city. Berlin, London and Madrid round off the top five. Some 20 thousand city-dwellers across the world, alongside the company’s global writers and editors were surveyed. Factors including cities’ food scenes, architecture and cultural activities were taken into account.
