# First up, cricket: Sunrisers Eastern Cape won their third SA20 title when they beat Pretoria Capitals by six-wickets at a sold-out Newlands in Cape Town. After being put into bat, the Capitals posted 158 for seven with Dewald Brevis smashing 101 off 56 balls, while Marco Jansen took three wickets. In reply, Matthew Breetzke scored an unbeaten 68 with Tristan Stubbs scoring 62 as Sunrisers reached the target with four balls to spare. They have now won three of the four SA20 tournaments.
More cricket news: South Africa is out of the Under-19 World Cup semifinal race after suffering a crushing six-wicket defeat to reigning champions Australia in Windhoek, Namibia. The young Proteas were bowled out for 118, with Charles Lachmund claiming three wickets. In reply, JJ Basson took three wickets, but opener Steven Hogan top-scored with 43 as Australia knocked off the total inside 33 overs. South Africa will face Sri Lanka in their final Super Six match on Thursday, before closing out their tournament with a placement match.
# Tennis: American Jessica Pegula has knocked out defending women’s singles champion and compatriot Madison Keys to reach her fourth Australian Open quarterfinal. She will next face compatriot Amanda Anisimova, who defeated China’s Wang Xinyu. In the men’s draw, Lorenzo Musetti is into his first quarterfinal in Melbourne, after beating American Taylor Fritz. The Italian will face record ten-time champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia, who reached the last eight when Czech Jakub Mensik withdrew due to injury.
# Golf: Zimbabwe’s Benjamin Follett-Smith captured the Cell C Challenge title with a one-shot victory over South Africa’s Haydn Porteous at the Killarney Country Club in Johannesburg. This is his third Sunshine Tour title. South Africa’s Kieron van Wyk finished third on 11 under par with a closing 70 in the tournament in honour of Gary Player. Follett-Smith says he is happy with his overall performance:
# And finally, American football: The Seattle Seahawks defeated the Los Angeles Rams 31-27 in the NFC Championship Game to book their fourth Super Bowl appearance. Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba starred for the Seahawks with ten catches and a touchdown, while quarterback Sam Darnold threw three touchdowns. Meanwhile, the Patriots booked their spot at a 12th Super Bowl with a 10-7 victory over the Denver Broncos. This year’s title decider on 8 February will be a rematch of 2015, when the Patriots beat the Seahawks to deny them back-to-back Super Bowl wins.
