# ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa’s land reform remains one of the most urgent tasks of the national democratic revolution. Ramaphosa delivered the January 8 statement at the ANC 114th celebration in Moruleng, North West. He says key tasks include strengthening support for land reform beneficiaries, accelerating the processing of outstanding restitution claims and resolving disputes more efficiently:
# The Minister in The Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, has condemned attempts to vilify her image. Government acting spokesperson, Nomonde Mnukwa says the photoshopping of her X account with vulgar images and misinformation is not only distasteful but shameful as well. She says in a country that is battling with a scourge of gender based violence, the continued use of sexual images to tarnish women is deplorable at the least:
# The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services in the Western Cape has reported a challenging night as the fire in Wemmershoek, Franschhoek continues to burn out of control. The municipality’s spokesperson Anesca Roodt says during the night, the fire spread rapidly down the mountain across a large area, threatening surrounding farms along the Wemmershoek Road. She says unfortunately, the fire damaged some infrastructure:
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA meanwhile has activated an extensive emergency animal rescue and disaster response following multiple severe fire incidents affecting both the Du Noon informal settlement and large areas of the Overstrand region. Spokesperson Belinda Abraham says families who fled the fire with nothing but the clothes they were wearing, and their companion animals are now facing impossible decisions. She says they managed to take 15 animals:
And the Overstrand Municipality in the Western Cape says the Stanford fire remains challenging, with renewed efforts focusing on the inaccessible old vegetation where active fire lines are still persisting. Overstrand municipal manager Dean O’Neill says all roads are open, including the R43 between Stanford, Gansbaai and Pearly Beach. Crews working on the Pearly Beach fire made good progress overnight along the border of Groeneweide and Panorama. The left flank’s active fire line has been contained, and mop-up operations will now continue.
# And finally cricket: MI Cape Town secured a vital 36-run victory over the Joburg Super Kings in their SA20 encounter at the Wanderers yesterday. Ryan Rickelton was the star, smashing an unbeaten 113 runs from just 60 balls to set up the win and boost their playoff aspirations. In the earlier match, Pretoria Capitals defeated the Paarl Royals by 21 runs at Boland Park, anchored by Sherfane Rutherford’s 42 not out.
